Staffordshire Club Cricket Championship vs Worcestershire County League

Old Wulfrunians Cricket Club, Wednesday 2nd July 2008

The SCCC Representative team played their second game of the season against the Worcestershire County League at OWT Cricket Club on Wednesday 2nd July. The ground as usual was in immaculate condition and credit must be given to the OWT staff for producing a track which looked perfect and whoever won the toss was certain to bat first. WCCL did so and had no hesitation in doing so.

Their innings got off to a disastrous start with SCCC skipper Chris Guest taking two wickets in the first over both batsmen being expertly caught behind by Tom Chew, 2 for 2 after one over was just the start we needed. After 10 overs WCCL had reached 46 for 2 when as predicted the rain came and their was a delay of 40 minutes which reduced the game to 40 overs.A further 20 runs were added before two more wickets fell in quick succession, D. Garriff for a well struck 31 and P.Pickering for 0 both caught behind by Chew off Matharu and Alcock respectively.

A partnership of 54 then developed with Danny Protherough and Dave Rees playing some fine shots before Chew picked up his 5th catch to dismiss Rees off Hadnan, before Hadnan took a fine catch off his own bowling to remove Weston for 7. Protherough was finally out for 61 again caught behind by Chew this time off Alcock who produced a fine spell of bowling and soon took another wicket removing Rogers again caught behind by Chew. The innings finished 0n 202 off 39.2 overs SCCC bowled caught and fielded to an exceptionally high standard which was a pleasure to watch.

During the tea interval the skies darkened and we feared the worst. After just one over of our reply the heavens opened and i'm afraid that was that, with the game being abandoned an hour later.

It was a delight to see so many spectators at the game Two life members Tom Waterhouse and Jack Wooton, our President John Priest, Chairman Bill Tranter, Vice Chairman Dave Unitt along with several members from Bloxwich, Springvale and OWT My thanks to you all for supporting our league team.

Special thanks to Old Wulfs Tettenhall staff for a first class tea. Mac the groundsman ably assisted by Dave And Bill for ensuring that we got some cricket in and Dave Jones from Penkridge for scoring.

Finally my thanks to the players who represented our league for giving up their time, arranging time off work to play and for performing to a very high standard.

The Next match is at Himley on the 18th August as part of Himley's 125th birthday week.

Warwickshire Cricket League vs Staffordshire Club Cricket Championship

Elford Cricket Club, Wednesday 11th June 2008

SCCC Skipper Brian Fisher won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first on what looked like an excellent track. Ben Holmes and Abdul Salom got the innings off to solid start putting on 23 before Abdul departed for 9. Ben Holmes was the anchor for the innings and showed his class by building Partnerships of 49 with Neil Whistance (13) 50 with Roger Fildes (30) and 56 with Chris Townsend (21 Not Out) And these Beacon CC youngsters showed maturity beyond their years in their first rep game. Ben was eventually out for 97 in the 42nd over and the innings finished on 210 for 8, which the lads thought was maybe 20/30 short of being a winning score but would still be competitive. Warwickhire's bowling attack was very experienced and bowled tight lines.

Their innings was opened by ex first class player Dan Marsh who scored 25 out of the opening Partnership of 28 before Roger Weston bowled him with an excellent delivery Roger and Mike Dodunski bowled with pace and guile, beating the bat and finding the edge regularly but without much luck.

A partnership of of 83 developed before we took our next wicket Neil Whistance claiming Dan Ward for 4,1 well caught behind by Tom Chew whose skills behind the stumps were evident throughout. Stuart Phazey bowled a controlled spell of left arm spin 1 for 24 off 9 overs but the innings was held together by Gary Poulton 66 and when he was out we sensed that if we continued to bowl with discipline a victory could be achieved. Warwickshire required 68 off eleven overs and lost two more wickets but eventually reached their target off the last ball of the 44th over.

The game was played in an excellent and competitive spirit and was a credit to the players of both leagues. Thanks to Elford Cricket Club for their exceptional teas and hospitality and to the numerous spectators who turned up to offer their support.

The next game is on Wednesday 2nd July against Worcestershire at Old Wulfrunians Tettenhall against Worcestershire County League. All spectators welcome to support your Representative Team.
